Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has engaged Nigerians living in the United Kingdom on the need to rethink how they support families back home, stressing the importance of channelling resources towards productive investments.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during an interaction with members of the Nigerian community in the UK, where discussions focused on Nigeria’s economic challenges, development and the role of citizens in the diaspora.
He urged Nigerians abroad to consider how their financial contributions could support sustainable development rather than being limited to routine remittances.
The former Anambra State governor has consistently advocated investment in education, healthcare, production and other sectors capable of creating jobs and improving living standards.
“You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no! Let’s put somebody who has proven…I’m not saying I’m a saint, but at least, I have said something”.
“I was not the only governor, and I challenge people if one governor can save 10 per cent of the money I saved, but there is nobody that did that,” he said.
His engagement with Nigerians in the UK comes amid ongoing concerns over the cost of living, unemployment and economic hardship in Nigeria.
The discussion also highlighted the potential role of the diaspora in national development through investments, skills transfer and support for businesses that can generate employment and strengthen the economy.
