Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has addressed the controversy surrounding his wife, Margaret Obi, following claims that she owns a luxury handbag allegedly worth about N250 million.
The controversy generated reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning the reported value of the bag in relation to Obi’s public image and his advocacy for prudent management of resources.
Reacting in an interview in Washington, DC, USA, Obi said his wife has her own financial resources and that her personal spending does not involve public funds.
He maintained that he has no control over what his wife chooses to buy with her personal money, stressing that his concern is the management of public resources.
Obi also dismissed any suggestion that his wife’s personal lifestyle should be linked to his political activities, noting that she is entitled to make her own financial decisions.
“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?
“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now.” Obi said.
The NDC candidate further spoke about his wife’s birthday, expressing his goodwill and describing his family as happy and united.
The controversy comes as Obi continues preparations for the 2027 presidential election, where he is expected to campaign on issues including prudent governance, accountability and responsible management of public resources.
