The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has raised concerns over an alleged plot to destabilise its structure, weaken its electoral chances and undermine efforts to build a strong opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, alleged that some former members and serving officials were working to create divisions within the party and weaken its grassroots support.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed claimed that those behind the alleged scheme planned to deploy hundreds of millions of naira to influence party members and create a faction.
He urged party members to resist attempts by individuals without proper authorisation to recruit polling agents in the party’s name, warning that such activities could undermine its internal structure.
He said, “Attempts to recruit polling agents for the party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted. A huge amount of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” Baba-Ahmed said.
The PRP chairman also cautioned serving party officials allegedly involved in the plot, saying disciplinary action would be taken against anyone found culpable.
“The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a faction with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed assured party members and supporters that the leadership remained committed to protecting the party’s interests and strengthening its position ahead of the 2027 elections.
He added that the PRP would continue participating in efforts to build an opposition coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in the next general election.
The allegations come amid political realignments and coalition discussions among opposition parties seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of the 2027 polls.
