The Nigerian senate has condemned revived attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, urging the authorities in Pretoria to take instant measures to guarantee the safety of Nigerian citizens and prevent further acts of violence that could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.
The senate’s position followed the concerns raised during plenary over reports of attacks targeting Nigerians living in South Africa. With lawmakers describing the incidents as unacceptable and contradictory with the principles that guide mutual respect and cooperation expected between African nations.
The lawmakers called on the federal Government to strengthen diplomatic interventions with South African authorities and seek clear commitments on the protection of Nigerians, as well as their businesses and properties across the country. They pointed out that Nigerians living abroad must be accorded their fundamental human rights and protected from unlawful attacks, harassment, humiliation and embarrassment.
The upper legislative chamber also demanded that the relevant authorities investigate reported cases of violence against Nigerian citizens and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. Senators noted that accountability remains critical to preventing the recurrence of such incidents and restoring confidence among Nigerians that reside in South Africa.
While acknowledging the historical relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, including Nigeria’s significant role in supporting South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, the senate maintained the existing bilateral ties must be strengthened through respect for human rights and the due protection of citizens within each country’s jurisdiction.
The latest intervention emanates amid renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa following reported cases of various attacks and deaths involving Nigerian nationals.
