Meet 7 Countries With the Highest Number of Churches Globally
Christianity has a significant presence across the world, with some countries recording tens of thousands of church buildings and places of Christian worship.
A ranking published by StatiSense on X has identified seven countries with the highest estimated number of church buildings globally. The figures are based largely on registered churches, meaning the actual numbers could be higher, particularly in countries where house churches and unregistered congregations are prevalent.
According to the ranking, the United States tops the list, followed by Brazil and Nigeria.
1. United States — 350,000 to 380,000 churches
The United States is estimated to have between 350,000 and 380,000 church buildings, making it the country with the highest number on the list.
Its long Christian tradition and religious diversity have contributed to the proliferation of churches, ranging from small community congregations to large megachurches.
2. Brazil — 280,000 to 300,000 churches
Brazil ranks second, with an estimated 280,000 to 300,000 churches.
Although Catholicism remains deeply rooted in the country, Evangelical and Pentecostal movements have expanded significantly in recent decades, contributing to the growth of Christian congregations.
3. Nigeria — More than 100,000 churches
Nigeria ranks third, with more than 100,000 churches.
The country has a large Christian population, particularly in the southern and central regions, where Pentecostal and Evangelical churches have a strong presence. Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations also operate numerous congregations across the country.
4. Russia — About 90,000 churches
Russia is estimated to have about 90,000 churches, placing it fourth on the list.
A significant proportion of these churches are affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church. Religious activity expanded following the collapse of the Soviet Union, when restrictions on religious practice were eased.
5. Mexico — About 88,000 churches
Mexico ranks fifth, with approximately 88,000 churches.
The country has a longstanding Catholic tradition, while Evangelical and other Christian denominations have also grown, contributing to a more diverse Christian landscape.
6. Philippines — About 85,000 churches
The Philippines has an estimated 85,000 churches, ranking sixth globally.
It is one of Asia’s predominantly Christian countries, with Roman Catholicism accounting for the majority of the Christian population. Evangelical, Protestant and independent Christian groups also maintain a significant and growing presence.
7. China — More than 70,000 churches
China completes the list with more than 70,000 registered churches and Christian places of worship.
However, the actual number of Christian congregations may be considerably higher because of the presence of house churches and other unregistered Christian communities.
StatiSense cautioned that the figures cited in the ranking are estimates based on registered church buildings and should not be regarded as an official global census of churches.
The figures therefore provide an indication of the scale of Christian worship infrastructure in the countries listed rather than a definitive count of all Christian congregations worldwide.
