The Federal Government and South-East leaders have commenced efforts to design a new security framework aimed at addressing the persistent insecurity in the region through stronger collaboration and intelligence-driven operations.
The initiative was disclosed by the Special to the Minister of Defence, Rear Admiral Oluwale Bankole (rtd.), following a strategic security engagement between the Minister of Defence and leaders from the South-East.
According to Bankole, the proposed framework is intended to provide a coordinated response to the security challenges confronting the region, including violent crimes and other threats to public safety.
He said the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to improve intelligence gathering, information sharing and operational effectiveness.
Bankole noted that the framework would also incorporate non-kinetic measures, including community engagement and socio-economic interventions, to address the underlying causes of insecurity and promote lasting peace.
The initiative comes amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government to restore stability in the South-East and create an enabling environment for economic growth and investment.
A key recommendation from the summit was to set up a unified database for the South East region. This database would be used for intelligence gathering, incorporating tools like CCTV monitoring and enhancing coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to implementing practical measures that will enhance security, protect lives and property, and foster sustainable peace across the region.
