The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N88.93bn in revenue between January and September 2026, while goods seized or detained within the period had a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N2.16bn.
The Acting Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller UU Adamu, disclosed this on Friday at a press briefing in Kano, where he presented the command’s revenue and enforcement performance.
Adamu said the command had generated N63.08bn in the first half of 2026, adding that its year-to-date revenue had subsequently increased to N88.93bn.
He said the command recorded a significant improvement in revenue collection during the period, with July witnessing its highest monthly collection since its establishment.
“It is therefore important to note that the month of July recorded the highest monthly collection in the history of the Command, with over N14bn generated,” he said.
On anti-smuggling operations, Adamu said various seizures and detentions made by the command had a combined DPV of N2.16bn.
Among the items seized were 1,491 cartons of foreign spaghetti valued at N38.74m; 2,928 packs of foreign macaroni worth N280.73m; foreign parboiled rice; vegetable oil; soaps; smuggled vehicles and suspected diverted transit truck heads.
The command also seized five 40-foot diverted transit containers with a DPV of N645.16m, seven smuggled vehicles valued at N410.54m and eight suspected diverted transit truck heads worth N300.91m.
Adamu further disclosed that Customs intercepted unregistered pharmaceutical products comprising 712,690 tablets and 17,470 vials and ampoules.
He said the pharmaceutical products had been handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control for further investigation and appropriate action.
Customs intercepts 48 wildlife specimens
On wildlife trafficking, the Acting Controller disclosed that the command intercepted 48 animals on August 25, comprising 15 primates, four wild cats, 25 wild birds, two albino crocodiles and a honey badger.
Three suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure and handed over to the Special Wildlife Office at the Customs headquarters.
Adamu described the operation as potentially the largest and most diverse single wildlife seizure recorded in the history of the NCS and possibly the West African sub-region.
“This is believed to be the largest and most diverse single seizure of wildlife ever recorded in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service and probably the West African sub-region,” he said.
The command also intercepted undeclared foreign currencies comprising $73,300, £15,975 and SAR827,800.
Two suspects linked to the currency interception were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Kano Zonal Directorate, for investigation.
Customs seizes vandalised power cables, counterfeit agro-packaging
Adamu said two suspects were also arrested with 993.9 metres of vandalised 150-square-millimetre high-voltage aluminium conductors, while 6,072 counterfeit agro-packaging materials were intercepted.
He raised further concern over attempts by smugglers to evade Customs controls, revealing that some of the intercepted smuggled vehicles were found bearing government service official number plates.
“Some intercepted smuggled vehicles have been found with Government Service official plate numbers in an attempt to evade Customs control,” he said.
The Acting Controller urged legitimate traders to comply with Customs and fiscal regulations, assuring them that the command would continue to balance enforcement with trade facilitation.
“For those engaged in legitimate trade, our message is clear: compliance remains the most effective way of conducting business without unnecessary interruption,” Adamu said.
