The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged the Anambra State Government to substantiate claims that his administration left behind unpaid debts and other financial obligations when he left office.
Obi made the challenge in a statement shared on his official social media page on Monday, following allegations by the state government that his administration inherited liabilities, including a N2 billion ecological loan.
The former Anambra governor rejected the claims, insisting that his administration settled historical gratuities and arrears amounting to more than N35 billion before handing over power.
He also maintained that salaries, gratuities and pensions were fully paid at the end of his tenure, while contractors whose projects had been completed and certified were also settled.
Addressing the disputed N2 billion ecological fund, Obi explained that the money was released about three months before the expiration of his tenure to address the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis.
According to him, he deliberately left the funds untouched for the incoming administration because the allocation was earmarked for the specific erosion project.
Obi further stated that the ecological allocation was distinct from more than N75 billion in savings which he said his administration left for the state.
“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning,” Obi said.
