The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has recorded 14 additional confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative infections to 1,035 as of epidemiological week 33.
The new cases were reported between August 10 and August 16 in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states, according to the latest situation report released by the agency in Abuja on Tuesday.
The death toll has also risen to 252, while the case fatality rate (CFR) increased to 24.4 per cent, compared with 18.6 per cent recorded in 2025.
“The 14 new cases represented an increase from four cases reported during epidemiological week 32, when cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states.
“In week 32, cumulative infections reached 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent,” it said.
The figures show continued fluctuations in weekly infections. Week 33 recorded 14 confirmed cases, up from four in week 32 but below the 17 cases documented in epidemiological week 31.
The disease has also continued to affect a wide geographical area.
“By week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 local government areas,” the agency said.
The NCDC said it would continue its activities to monitor and contain the disease as Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern across affected states.
