The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Kebbi State Directorate, has called for calm among residents as fluctuations in the retail price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) continue to put pressure on households and businesses.
The agency’s Kebbi State Director, Muhammed Nasir Karofi, made the appeal in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, urging citizens to remain patient as the country navigates prevailing economic pressures.
Karofi explained that changes in international crude oil prices, foreign exchange movements and other market conditions were responsible for fluctuations in petrol prices under Nigeria’s deregulated downstream petroleum sector.
He noted that similar adjustments in fuel prices and inflationary pressures were being experienced in neighbouring West African countries.
The NOA director acknowledged the difficulties caused by higher petrol costs, particularly for households and small businesses. However, he said the Federal Government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies was intended to ease fiscal pressure on the government and free up resources for critical sectors, including infrastructure, security, education and social welfare.
Karofi also highlighted measures introduced by the Kebbi State Government to reduce the burden of rising living costs on residents. According to him, the interventions include public transportation support, healthcare initiatives, agricultural assistance and welfare programmes targeted at vulnerable groups.
He urged community leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups and other citizens to exercise patience while supporting efforts aimed at tackling the prevailing economic challenges.
Karofi stressed the importance of collective responsibility and public understanding as government at both the federal and state levels implement measures designed to mitigate the effects of rising costs.
