Suspected gunmen have abducted a staff member of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and shot a businessman in separate attacks in Anambra State, heightening concerns over insecurity in the region.
The INEC official Christy Nkiru Okeke was reportedly kidnapped around 7:00 PM on July 24 along a major route by armed assailants, who whisked the victim away to an unknown destination. The abductors are said to have demanded a ransom of N40 million for the official’s release.
The incident was reported by security analyst Zagazola Makama.
According to the reporter, Tochukwu Afunenu, a staff member, reportedly fled into a bush during an attack, taking his employer’s ATM card and two phones. Later, Nwobodo grew suspicious when voice messages from Afunenu’s phone claimed he was kidnapped and demanded a N40 million ransom.
“Police said extensive combing of surrounding bushes and intelligence-led tracking operations are ongoing to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend the perpetrators,” the report stated.
In a separate incident, a businessman sustained gunshot injuries after he was attacked by unidentified gunmen. The victim was rushed to a medical facility for treatment, while the attackers fled the scene.
Security operatives have launched into both incidents and intensified efforts to rescue the kidnapped INEC staff member and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.
The latest incidents have renewed calls for stronger security measures to stem the wave of kidnappings and violent crimes in Anambra State.
