An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a 74-year-old cleric, Joseph Adeniran, over an alleged defilement involving his nine-year-old granddaughter.
Adeniran was arraigned on a charge of defilement following an allegation that the incident occurred at his residence in Meiran, Lagos, on June 18, 2026.
The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the matter came to light after a neighbour noticed bloodstains on the child’s clothing and raised an alarm.
According to the prosecution, the child subsequently identified her grandfather as the person responsible, leading to a report at the police station and the defendant’s arrest.
The alleged offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, C.M. Kushanu, did not take the defendant’s plea but ordered that he be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Adeniran is expected to remain in custody until September 24, when the matter is scheduled to come up again.
