The former Director of Army Public Relations, retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, has called on the Federal Government to adopt a technology-driven strategy to effectively combat terrorism and banditry across the country.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics aired by Channels Television, Usman said the fight against insecurity must go beyond conventional military operations, stressing the need for advanced surveillance systems and intelligence-led policing to tackle emerging threats.
He noted that many individuals who later became leaders of terrorist and bandit groups had shown signs of violent and criminal behaviour long before taking up arms. According to him, deploying modern technology would enable security agencies to identify, monitor and neutralise such threats before they develop into major security challenges.
Usman said integrating digital tools with intelligence gathering would strengthen the ability of security agencies to track criminal networks, disrupt their operations and improve response to security threats nationwide.
He made a statement saying that “All the leadership of the banditry and the kingpins of terrorists, if you look at their history, they have exhibited some form of violent extremism right from the beginning, or they have this tendency of criminality over time, and the system was unable to check them too.
“Technology helps in the sense that even if a criminal has a tendency of committing crime, the system will eventually catch up with him.
He further urged the government to invest in modern security infrastructure, enhance collaboration among intelligence agencies and prioritise innovative solutions capable of addressing the evolving tactics of terrorist and bandit groups.
