Ebola: Medical Expert Urges Nigerians to Avoid Kissing, Hugs, Handshakes

The President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, Professor Oladapo Ashiru, has advised Nigerians to avoid kissing, hugging, handshakes and other unnecessary physical contact as precautionary measures following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja.

Ashiru gave the warning during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, urging Nigerians to maintain good hygiene and observe preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection.

He explained that Ebola is not transmitted through the air but spreads through direct contact with the blood and other body fluids of an infected person who has developed symptoms, or through contaminated materials.

“Ebola is not airborne. But avoid kisses, hugs and handshakes,” Ashiru said.

The medical expert also called for stronger surveillance at airports, seaports and land borders, alongside improved infection prevention measures in healthcare facilities.

He urged health workers to remain alert to suspected cases, ensure prompt isolation and report them to the appropriate public health authorities.

The warning follows the Federal Government’s confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja involving a woman who had recently travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda. Health authorities said contact tracing had begun, with 44 contacts identified for monitoring.

Ashiru’s advisory forms part of broader efforts by medical experts to prevent further transmission and strengthen Nigeria’s preparedness against the disease.
