Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has applied to the court for the issuance of subpoenas compelling Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, to testify in his ongoing cybercrime trial.
The move came after DSS operative Uwem Davies, a prosecution witness, testified on Wednesday that he acted on the instruction of the agency’s Director-General when he directed Sowore to take down social media posts concerning President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore’s legal team argued that the testimonies of the two officials are crucial to the fair determination of the case, insisting that they possess material evidence relevant to the issues before the court.
Defence counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), argued that the prosecution witness failed to provide satisfactory answers to critical questions during cross-examination, necessitating the appearance of the DSS Director-General to testify before the court.
“We intend to apply for a subpoena to compel the Director-General of the DSS to appear before this Honourable Court, following issues raised during the witness’s testimony,” Olumide-Fusika told the court.
The defence urged the court to grant the application in the interest of justice, maintaining that compelling the witnesses to appear would ensure a comprehensive examination of the facts surrounding the allegations.
The matter was subsequently adjourned for further proceedings as the court considers the application.
