The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized Nigerian politicians who he said rely on political godfathers, wealthy sponsors and established parties they did not help build to advance their electoral ambitions.
Sowore made the remarks in a social media post while defending the AAC and highlighting what he described as the grassroots foundation of the party.
According to the activist and politician, the party emerged from the courage, sacrifices and contributions of ordinary Nigerians rather than the financial backing of powerful political figures.
He questioned the decision of politicians who profess confidence in their ability to win elections but repeatedly switch political parties when elections approach instead of creating and developing movements of their own.
Sowore also criticised politicians whom he accused of attempting to convince supporters of existing political platforms to abandon them in favour of other parties.
He argued that politicians who are convinced of the strength of their ideas and political structures should demonstrate that strength by independently organising and mobilising Nigerians without relying on wealthy patrons or pre-existing political machinery.
“If their ideas are so compelling, let them organize. If their platforms are so popular, let them mobilize. If their politics is so powerful, let them build,” Sowore said.
He maintained that the AAC was established through the commitment and sacrifices of its members and supporters, rather than being created as a vehicle for the ambitions of wealthy political actors.
Sowore’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and political groups positioning themselves for the contest.
