Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has questioned the suitability of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing his age.
Fayose likened Atiku to former United States President Joe Biden, arguing that advanced age should be a major consideration when Nigerians assess presidential candidates.
He said Atiku, who would be in his 80s during the 2027 election, should consider stepping aside and allowing younger political leaders to take over the contest.
Fayose’s comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Atiku emerging as one of the leading opposition figures seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Atiku is now really old. He’s a good man, but time has caught up with him. Atiku contesting an election is like calling Biden to come and contest again.
“Let me say this again: President Bola Tinubu, Atiku and Peter Obi, this is their last chance of contesting an election. The three of them.
“In Rivers State, during this election, Amaechi will have very little support. Even the party is not together. Most of these ADC and Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, members are not on ground. Nobody is connected to those parties yet.” He said.
Atiku, a former vice president and presidential candidate in previous elections, has remained active in opposition politics and is currently associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Fayose’s remarks have added to the ongoing debate over age, experience and generational change in Nigeria’s political leadership.
