The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, has advocated for the introduction of electronic voting in Nigeria, describing technology-based elections as a key step towards improving transparency, efficiency and confidence in the country’s democratic process.
The traditional ruler made the call while emphasising the need for continued reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system to address challenges associated with manual voting and enhance the integrity of election outcomes.
The Emir noted that the adoption of electronic voting machines would help modernise the electoral process by reducing human errors, improving the speed of vote counting and ensuring a more reliable system for managing elections.
He stressed that with adequate planning, security measures and institutional preparedness, digital voting could contribute majorly to strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.
While speaking he indicated that Nigeria must embrace innovations that align with global advancements in electoral management while ensuring that such technologies are properly tested and adapted to the country’s unique realities.
According to him, the Kaduna delegation visited Shenzhen in China, where the machines were manufactured,before watching elections conducted with the technology in Brazil and the US.
The call adds to ongoing conversations among political leaders, electoral experts and stakeholders on the need to improve Nigeria’s election processes ahead of future polls.
