Tinubu Directs 95% NIN Enrolment Coverage by December 2026

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to achieve 95 per cent coverage in National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment by December 2026.

The directive was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja during the 8th National Identity Day celebration, where the President outlined the administration’s plans to strengthen Nigeria’s identity infrastructure as part of its digital economy agenda.

Represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tinubu said the government was developing the digital infrastructure needed to make the country’s identity system a key driver of economic growth.

He said the theme of this year’s celebration underscored the importance of connecting Nigeria’s digital ecosystem to its emerging digital economy and wider economic development.

“Nigeria’s digital ecosystem must power Nigeria’s digital economy, and Nigeria’s digital economy must help power Africa’s economy. Our identity infrastructure will be a critical component of this ambition,” he said.

The President said the administration’s objective was to establish a system in which citizens could rely on a secure digital identity to access online businesses, banking services, welfare programmes, healthcare, education and transportation.

He further disclosed that efforts were being accelerated to establish a secure national system capable of safeguarding digital documents, electronic signatures and online transactions.

According to him, the initiative would enable Nigerians to securely sign documents electronically, authenticate official government documents, and protect digital payments and government communications.

The push for wider NIN enrolment is expected to strengthen the foundation for identity-based digital services and support the government’s broader plans for a more integrated digital economy.
