Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has asked the Lagos State House of Assembly to approve a review and reordering of the state’s 2026 Appropriation Law, known as the “Budget of Shared Prosperity.”
The request was formally transmitted to the legislature and presented during Tuesday’s plenary after the Clerk of the House, Adenike Oshinowo, read the governor’s communication before lawmakers.
In the letter, Sanwo-Olu outlined the administration’s priorities and the considerations behind the proposed changes to the approved budget.
During deliberations, Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Olumoh Sa’ad, disclosed that implementation of the 2026 budget had reached approximately 69 per cent.
Sa’ad said adjusting the spending plan would allow the government to channel available resources into areas requiring greater attention.
He also proposed that the review could provide an opportunity for the governor to reconsider the N200 billion bond request recently submitted to the Assembly for approval.
Speaking on the matter, Aro Moshood described the proposed budget adjustment as a reflection of the flexibility provided by democratic governance.
He expressed confidence that the exercise would enable the administration to respond more efficiently to the needs of Lagos residents.
Another member, Gbolahan Yishawu, praised the progress recorded in budget implementation but urged the government to concentrate funding on projects that had attained significant milestones and were nearing completion.
Yishawu said financial allocations should correspond with the scope and current stage of individual projects to ensure that public funds were used effectively.
He noted that although several capital projects had made substantial progress, some were still ongoing and required additional funding to be completed.
Kehinde Joseph called for greater attention to environmental challenges, particularly drainage infrastructure and flood-control initiatives.
He urged the government to provide sufficient funding for interventions aimed at curbing flooding and improving the quality of life of residents.
After the debate, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, referred the governor’s request to the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget for further consideration.
Obasa directed the committee to submit its findings and recommendations to the House within two weeks.
