The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the wave of violence recorded ahead of the state’s governorship election, calling on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the poll.
The union made the appeal on Thursday amid growing concerns over reported clashes and acts of intimidation in parts of the state as preparations for the election intensify.
In a statement issued by the council, the NUJ warned that electoral violence threatens democratic governance, public safety and the credibility of the governorship election, urging all stakeholders to place the state’s interest above partisan considerations.
The council also called on security agencies to remain professional and impartial in maintaining law and order, while ensuring the protection of voters, journalists, electoral officials and other participants throughout the electoral process.
It further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver a free, fair and credible election, stressing that adherence to the rule of law and respect for democratic principles are essential to a peaceful outcome.
The journalists urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peace and civility throughout the election period, emphasizing that the governorship election must not be approached as a do-or-die contest.
“Politicians should play by the rules and rein in their supporters. Election should not be a do or die affair,” the communiqué stated.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and urged media practitioners covering the election to uphold ethical standards by providing accurate, balanced and factual reports.
