The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APCPCC), Abdulaziz Yari has urged northerners to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.
Yari made the call on Monday in Lagos when he led members of the campaign council to the palace of Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos.
The former Zamfara governor said Tinubu supported former President Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence and re-election despite pressure on him to contest the presidency in 2019.
According to Yari, Tinubu had insisted that it was the turn of the north to produce the president and remained committed to Buhari’s candidacy.
“For us in the north, I think it is time for us to pay Tinubu back for allowing the north to complete its full term,” Yari said.
He said Tinubu had demonstrated his commitment to fairness by supporting Buhari and should now receive similar support from the north.
“Today, I don’t think there is an excuse for us from the northern region not to support Tinubu to continue the good job he started and complete his tenure,” he said.
Yari, who represents Zamfara West in the Senate, said northern leaders would work to ensure that Tinubu’s administration continued beyond 2027.
“The message from northern Nigeria, where I came from, is that there is nothing to worry about. There are still people of high calibre and character who believe in justice and fairness. We are going to do our best to ensure that Tinubu’s journey continues to the end. He can count on us,” he said.
The senator also said Tinubu had restructured the country despite inheriting difficult economic and political conditions from previous administrations.
Yari said the campaign council was not seeking Tinubu’s re-election merely on the basis of power rotation, but because it believed Nigerians wanted him to remain in office.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who received the campaign council before accompanying its members to the monarch’s palace, said the visit to traditional rulers reflected the important role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, unity and national development.
