The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory Council, has declared an indefinite strike across the FCT over unresolved grievances concerning the promotion and conditions of service of teachers.
The industrial action commenced on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Administration.
NLC FCT Council Chairman, Knabayi Adalo, said the administration’s response to the union’s demands was unacceptable, prompting the council to direct workers in both the public and private sectors to withdraw their services.
A major demand of the union is the removal of the vacancy requirement for the promotion of FCT teachers. It also wants teachers who were eligible for promotion in 2025 to be allowed to take their examinations before or alongside the 2026 candidates.
The NLC is further demanding the withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to directors covered by the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022.
The union has directed affiliate organisations to mobilise members and establish enforcement committees across the territory. Schools, hospitals, offices and other government establishments are expected to remain shut until the grievances are resolved.
The NLC also urged parents, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to prevail on the FCT Administration to address the issues, while warning against victimisation of workers participating in the strike.
