Hundreds of College of Nursing Students Protest Over Attack on Girls’ Hostel in Jalingo

Academic activities were disrupted today at the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, as hundreds of students staged a peaceful protest over an alleged attack on the female hostel by suspected hoodlums.

The students, mostly females, blocked the main entrance to the college carrying placards with inscriptions such as “We Need Security”, “Our Lives Matter”, “Secure Our Hostel Now” and “We Came to Study, Not to Be Attacked.”

According to eyewitnesses and students who spoke to CSONEWS24, the incident occurred in the early hours of the night when suspected criminals invaded the girls’ hostel, causing panic and dispossessing students of their phones, money and other valuables.

One of the students who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimization said, “This is not the first time they are attacking our hostel. We are no longer safe. The school fence is broken in many places, there is no adequate lighting and no security personnel at night. We cannot continue like this.”

The protesting students demanded immediate intervention by the college management and the state government to improve security within and around the campus, including perimeter fencing, installation of solar lights, deployment of armed security personnel and strict regulation of movement into the hostel area.

As at the time of filing this report, the Provost of the College and other management staff were in a closed-door meeting with student leaders to address the grievances.

Efforts to get official reaction from the college management were still ongoing.
