El-Rufai’s Son Names Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Kwankwaso Among Those Who Called

Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has disclosed that several prominent opposition figures contacted him to inquire about his father’s situation.

Bello, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, named former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso among those who reached out.

He particularly appreciated Obi for repeatedly checking on his father despite their previous political disagreements.

Bello said the contacts from the politicians were significant to him, describing them as an indication that political differences could be set aside during difficult circumstances.

Nasir El-Rufai has been facing legal proceedings since his detention by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in February 2026.

The former governor is also facing a separate case brought by the Department of State Services (DSS) and has denied the allegations against him.

Bello’s disclosure comes amid continued political discussions over El-Rufai’s legal battles and his role in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a video, Bello said: “Politicians like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Kwankwaso, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and others called me to ask about my dad.

“I would like to thank them, particularly Mr Peter Obi. He always called me to ask about my dad. And for me, at 38, it’s a lesson in life because, in the case of Obi, I used to be critical of him.

“And for Malam, he is using the time to finish books, catch up, read the Quran, so it’s also a moment for him in isolation to reflect, plan better, and tone down on things like that.”
