Edo Police Arrest Three After AAU Lecturer Dies in Hotel Room
A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old woman.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying it received a report at about 8 p.m. that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the police, Uwuigbe reportedly sent the woman to purchase water for him. Upon her return, she allegedly found him lying unresponsive in the hotel room.
The police said the hotel owner, manager and the woman have been arrested and detained at the command headquarters as investigations continue.
The lecturer’s remains have also been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Confirming Uwuigbe’s employment with the university, AAU’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Aladenika, said the incident occurred outside the institution and had no connection with the university.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika was quoted as saying.
He added that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
AAU Online News, a platform reporting developments within the university community, also confirmed Uwuigbe’s death in a Facebook post, describing it as a “shocking” loss.
The platform identified him as a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science and expressed condolences to his family, colleagues, students and other members of the university community.
The police have commenced investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
