The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Cross River State chapter, has urged the state’s representatives in the National Assembly to protect its interests in ongoing discussions over the ownership and status of its oil wells.
The call was made in a statement signed by IPAC State Chairman, Effiom Edet Okon, who described the matter as important to the state’s economic future.
IPAC urged the senators and House of Representatives members from Cross River to work together in addressing issues concerning the state’s oil resources.
The council said legislative decisions and public statements on the matter should be guided by constitutional provisions, fairness and the interests of Cross River residents.
It also appealed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other public officials to exercise caution in their comments on issues affecting the state’s territorial and economic interests.
IPAC stressed the need for dialogue and peaceful engagement in resolving the dispute, while maintaining that Cross River’s legitimate economic interests must be protected.
The development comes amid renewed attention to the state’s disputed oil wells following the decision by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to reopen verification of disputed and newly drilled oil and gas wells.
