2027: Wike vows to resign as FCT minister if Tinubu loses Abuja, Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from the Federal Executive Council if President Bola Tinubu loses the presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in 2027.

Wike made the declaration during an engagement with the leadership and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

The minister said his continued stay in office would depend on his ability to deliver electoral support for Tinubu in the FCT and his home state, Rivers, at the 2027 presidential election.

Wike specifically said he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, if Tinubu failed to win both territories at the presidential poll.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.

“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he added.

Wike also disclosed that efforts were underway to build a multi-party political coalition in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the coalition would support candidates across various elective positions while maintaining its backing for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people, unlike those who only appear on television. The two House of Representatives candidates we are supporting are also here. They are former Area Council chairmen,” he said.

The minister said the coalition was intended to secure electoral victories across the FCT.

“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results.

“If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation,” Wike said.
