The National Assembly has suspended official visits by its members and staff to South Africa following renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
The directive was contained in a circular signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr Kamari Ogunlana.
Ogunlana said the decision was taken in view of recent developments involving attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, stressing that the safety and wellbeing of Nigerian citizens remained a major concern.
He directed all official visits and engagements involving the National Assembly in South Africa to be suspended pending further review of the situation.
“The National Assembly calls on the Government of the Republic of South Africa to take urgent and concrete measures to protect Nigerians and other African nationals and prevent further attacks.
“The National Assembly leadership urged South African authorities to investigate reported incidents thoroughly, arrest suspected perpetrators and prosecute those culpable in accordance with the law.” Ogunlana said.
The move underscores growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and the possible implications of recurring xenophobic attacks for relations between both countries.
The National Assembly is expected to continue monitoring developments and reassess the suspension as further measures are considered.
