Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has recounted the political challenges he faced before emerging as governor of Rivers State in 2015.
Wike said his emergence was the result of determination and political resilience despite opposition from influential figures within and outside the state.
The former governor recalled the intense political battles surrounding the 2015 governorship election, saying he remained focused despite efforts to frustrate his ambition.
According to Wike, his victory was achieved through strategic political engagement, grassroots support and the determination of his supporters.
“Today, I am a Minister of the FCT; yesterday, I was a governor. Who did God use for me to become governor? It was Dan.
“There was nothing in this world that was not done to induce him.
“My governor then sent people to Dan, offered him everything in this world, but Dan stood firm and said, ‘No, I will not accept. I will not agree,’” Wike said.
He said his experience in Rivers politics taught him the importance of standing firm in the face of political pressure and remaining committed to one’s objectives.
Wike served as Rivers State governor from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed FCT minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He made the remarks while reflecting on his political journey and the experiences that shaped his career in public service.
