President Bola Tinubu has called on religious leaders across Nigeria to intensify their efforts against terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and the misuse of religion to justify violence.
Tinubu made the call in Kano on Sunday in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani.
The President urged clerics and religious institutions to strengthen peace education, religious literacy, moral guidance and efforts to steer young people away from extremism.
He also called on religious leaders to promote justice, compassion and peaceful resolution of grievances, stressing that no genuine religious service could justify the killing of innocent people.
Tinubu highlighted the extensive transnational networks of the Tijjaniyya Order, saying they could play a significant role in reconciliation, countering violent extremism, youth guidance and humanitarian support.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with religious and traditional leaders to promote peace, national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
The President also paid tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, describing him as a voice of moderation, scholarship and peace, and urged the preservation of his legacy.
