Shettima Demands Answers Over 37 Deaths, Approves N250m for Victims’ Families

Vice President Kashim Shettima has demanded a full investigation into the deaths of 37 people in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), while announcing ₦250 million in support for the victims’ families.

Shettima directed relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

He spoke on Monday during a condolence visit to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago at the Government House in Minna, where he conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s sympathy to the people of the state.

He said the Federal Government was concerned by the incident and would not allow unanswered questions surrounding the deaths to undermine public confidence in security institutions.

“The death of 37 young men in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps calls for initial questions,” he said.

The Vice President also approved ₦250 million as assistance to the affected families, describing the gesture as part of the government’s response to the tragedy.

According to him, “Grief alone cannot answer the questions of bereaved families. A grieving mother cannot be consoled by grief, nor can grief answer a father’s questions,”

“There can be no room for hiding leaders when lives are lost within the perimeter of their sphere,” he said.

The development has renewed calls for greater accountability and improved standards in the handling and welfare of people held in security custody.

Shettima stressed the need for transparency in the investigation and assured the families that the government would take appropriate action based on the findings.
