The Cross River State Police Command has intensified efforts to tackle cultism, political thuggery and other forms of youth-related violence at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, disclosed this during a meeting with the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, and members of the management team in Calabar.
Ordue said the command would establish a Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) unit at the university to sensitise students and strengthen engagement on security-related issues.
He said the initiative would address cultism, violence, drug abuse and other social vices capable of threatening the safety and wellbeing of students.
The commissioner also called for stronger engagement with young people ahead of forthcoming elections to discourage political thuggery, online incitement and other forms of youth-driven violence.
He assured the university management of the command’s commitment to proactive, intelligence-led and community-oriented policing, stressing the importance of early intervention in preventing security threats.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed the university’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the police to maintain a peaceful and secure academic environment.
