Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the recent governorship election as a major test of the state’s democratic values and commitment to the rule of law.
Adeleke stated this in a broadcast marking the 35th anniversary of Osun State, where he commended residents for remaining committed to democracy despite the tensions and challenges surrounding the election.
The governor said the electoral process subjected the state to difficult circumstances, including violence that led to deaths, injuries and disruption of livelihoods.
He praised residents for choosing the ballot over confrontation and urged them to maintain peace as the state moves beyond the election.
“Nationally, my people have emerged as a shining light for democratic practice.” The governor said.
Adeleke, who secured re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, pledged to use his second term to heal divisions, unite the people and promote an inclusive administration.
“As true sons and daughters of the Source, you not only voted but you defended your votes even at personal risk to your lives.” Adeleke said.
He also promised to uphold equity, fairness and accountability while remaining open to constructive criticism in the interest of the state’s development.
“I recognise the pains and sacrifices of our people in the last few months. The sacrifices of those killed or injured will not go in vain.” He said.
The governor called on residents to reject reprisals and work together towards rebuilding trust and strengthening democratic values in Osun.
“On this anniversary day, we have a lot to be proud of despite our challenges. I seek continued cooperation from residents to deliver good governance.” He added.
