The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Osun State Mr Olajide Esan has called for far-reaching reforms in Nigeria’s political system, arguing that fundamental changes are needed to address governance challenges and strengthen democratic institutions.
During the course of outlining his political agenda, Olajide Esan criticised aspects of the country’s current political framework stating that “The system doesn’t allow people with ideas, but those who see politics and governance as a business to run for office. It is not sustainable, and this is one of the reasons why I decided to run for office,”
He argued that Nigeria’s democratic process requires a shift away from existing practices that, according to him, have contributed to poor leadership outcomes and weakened citizens’ confidence in government institutions.
The statement comes as national discussions continue over electoral reforms, governance structures, and the need to improve democratic accountability.
Stakeholders across party lines have continued to debate ways to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking on agriculture, the candidate called for a transition towards an agro-based economy, emphasising the need for policies that preserve local farming practices. He also raised concerns over the adoption of genetically modified organisms, urging a careful evaluation of such technologies before widespread implementation.
In the mining sector, Esan criticised the continued activities of illegal miners, alleging that the economic benefits from mineral resources have been concentrated in the hands of a few individuals rather than serving the wider population.
He stated that addressing illegal mining remains a key component of the AAC’s manifesto, arguing that natural resources should contribute directly to the development and welfare of Osun residents.
The policy proposals come as political parties intensify preparations and present governance alternatives ahead of the Osun governorship election, with candidates expected to outline strategies for economic development, social welfare, and institutional reforms.
