NiMet Predicts 3 Days of Thunderstorms, Rainfall Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning that strong winds could precede storms in some areas.

NiMet, in its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, said parts of the North-East, North-Central and southern regions would experience varying degrees of rainfall during the three-day period.

For Monday, the agency predicted morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rain over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states, with scattered thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected across parts of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi later in the day.

In the North-Central region, NiMet forecast thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Niger State in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall across most parts of the region in the afternoon or evening.

The agency also predicted cloudy conditions over the southern region on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain expected over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. More thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected across the region later in the day.

For Tuesday, NiMet forecast patches of cloud over the northern region in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Taraba State. By the afternoon or evening, most parts of the region are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall.

Across the North-Central region, partly cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, while thunderstorms and moderate rain are forecast over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states later in the day.

The southern region is expected to remain mostly cloudy on Tuesday morning, with thunderstorms and light rain forecast over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South states.

On Wednesday, NiMet predicted partly cloudy skies across the northern region in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.

It further forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most parts of the northern region later in the day.

For the North-Central, partly cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of the FCT, Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa states. Moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across most parts of the region later in the day.

The southern region is also expected to experience cloudy conditions on Wednesday morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most areas later in the day.

NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in areas expecting rainfall and urged residents to take necessary precautions.

The agency advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall and disconnect electrical appliances from power outlets during thunderstorms.

It also urged residents to stay away from tall trees to avoid injuries from falling branches or trees.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports and other relevant flight documentation to support effective operational planning.

NiMet urged the public to remain informed through its regular weather updates and advisories.
