NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Rainfall, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy conditions, thunderstorms and varying degrees of rainfall across different parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its three-day weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency predicted sunny skies with patches of cloud over the northern region on Sunday, with possibilities of early morning thunderstorms and light rainfall in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa states.

NiMet said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall were expected across most parts of the northern region during the afternoon and evening hours.

For the North-Central region, the agency forecast sunny skies with patches of cloud and chances of early morning thunderstorms, with light rainfall expected in parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory. It added that thunderstorms and moderate rainfall were likely across most parts of the region later in the day.

The southern region was expected to experience predominantly cloudy conditions, with chances of light morning rainfall in parts of Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

Moderate rainfall was also forecast in parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states during the afternoon and evening.

Monday Forecast

For Monday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with patches of cloud over the northern region, with possibilities of morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states.

The agency said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall were expected in parts of Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states later in the afternoon or evening.

Across the North-Central region, cloudy skies with spells of sunshine were expected, alongside possible morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.

However, the weather was expected to become predominantly sunny with a few patches of cloud across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet also forecast cloudy conditions over the southern region, with prospects of light rainfall across most parts of the South-West during the morning. Moderate rainfall was expected over parts of the South-East and South-South later in the day.

Tuesday Forecast

On Tuesday, the agency predicted sunny skies over the northern region, with a few patches of cloud during the morning hours.

It forecast afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall in parts of Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna and the North-East.

For the North-Central region, sunny skies with patches of cloud were expected during the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet also predicted cloudy conditions over the southern region, with prospects of light morning rainfall in parts of Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Moderate rainfall was expected across the region during the afternoon and evening.

NiMet Issues Safety Advisory

The weather agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in areas where rainfall is expected.

It advised members of the public to take necessary precautions, particularly by securing loose objects that could be blown away or cause injury during strong winds.

NiMet also urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during storms and keep away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or uprooted trees.

The agency further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet to support effective operational planning.

Residents were also encouraged to remain updated through official weather forecasts and advisories issued by the agency.
