The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old woman, Khadija Ibrahim, over the alleged theft of a newborn baby in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.
The command revealed in a statement released on Sunday by its spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, that the suspect allegedly took the baby shortly after the mother, Fatima Muhammad, gave birth on July 23, 2025.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that Khadija had allegedly deceived her husband into believing that she was pregnant and had given birth.
The command said the suspect allegedly took the newborn in an attempt to conceal the fact that she had not delivered a child.
Police authorities have commenced investigation into the incident to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and determine whether other persons were involved.
The command said the baby was recovered and efforts were ongoing to reunite the child with the family.
The suspect is expected to face prosecution after the completion of the investigation.
