Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the runway excursion incident involving an aircraft at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Obi urged the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, stressing the need to identify the underlying factors behind the occurrence and prevent future aviation mishaps.
In a statement, Obi expressed concern over the safety implications of the incident, noting that aviation authorities must ensure strict compliance with safety standards and operational procedures across the country’s airports.
According to the former Anambra State governor, he was relieved to learn that all 68 passengers and crew members on board the aircraft escaped without injuries or loss of life.
“I received, with profound relief, the news of the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft during its landing at Benin Airport today,” Obi said.
He emphasised that investigations should go beyond addressing the immediate circumstances of the incident by examining possible technical, operational, and infrastructural issues that may have contributed to the runway excursion.
The former presidential candidate said transparency and accountability in the investigation process would help strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector and improve safety measures.
He also called on relevant agencies to implement recommendations from the investigation to safeguard passengers, aviation workers, and the travelling public.
