Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics, NAMDA, have given the Federal Government an additional three weeks to conclude ongoing negotiations on their demands concerning remuneration, working conditions and other welfare issues.
The communique, which was endorsed by the President of NAMDA, Dr. Nosa Lancy Orhue, and the Acting Secretary General, Prof. Aniekan Peter, was released to journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, following the association’s Emergency National Executive Council meeting.
The doctors had earlier raised concerns over delays in reaching agreements on key aspects of their demands, prompting the association to extend the negotiation timeline.
The NAMDA said the three-week extension is intended to give both parties sufficient time to resolve outstanding matters and reach mutually acceptable agreements.
“The communique read in part, ”A three-week timeline extension was adopted for further consideration. E-NEC further resolved that the extension period should be utilised by government to resolve all outstanding issues. Failure to achieve meaningful resolution at the expiration of the period ending on the 31st of August 2026, shall result in the declaration of a three-day warning strike to be announced by NOC.”
The association urged the Federal Government to use the period to address the issues under negotiation and prevent further deterioration of industrial relations within the health sector.
It warned that failure to achieve meaningful progress within the extended period could lead to further action, while stressing its preference for dialogue and a negotiated settlement.
The development comes amid persistent concerns over doctors’ welfare, remuneration and the retention of medical professionals in Nigeria’s public health system.
