Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has admitted he is firmly in contention for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after a standout season for club and country.
The England captain was speaking ahead of the official announcement of the award’s 30-man shortlist, with competition expected from the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.
Kane enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Bayern, playing a key role in the club’s domestic success while maintaining his reputation as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.
His performances also strengthened his case on the international stage, keeping him among the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
Kane said: “The thing with football opinions – there are so many opinions, so many arguments for different players, and people love this player because ‘he’s fast’ and ‘he’s got great IQ’ and ‘his finishing is great’.
“So I think that is what makes football special, all those debates, and the Ballon d’Or is definitely one of them. I’m happy that I am in contention, so we will have to wait and see.”
However, Kane faces strong competition from Mbappe, Yamal and other leading candidates whose performances during the 2025/26 season and 2026 World Cup have shaped the Ballon d’Or race.
The official shortlist is expected to provide a clearer picture of the leading contenders ahead of the award ceremony in October.
Kane, who has never won the Ballon d’Or, will be hoping his consistency and goalscoring record are enough to earn him the top individual honour in world football.
