Atiku Demands Answers as INEC Faces Scrutiny Over Redeployment of Tinubu Campaign Spokesman’s Wife

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing calls for transparency over the reported redeployment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi, wife of a member of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 campaign team, to head the commission’s Electoral Operations Department.

The development has triggered debate over political neutrality, due process and public confidence in the electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections, with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar demanding an immediate explanation from the commission.

Adeyemi-Showunmi, who reportedly previously served in INEC’s administration department in Lagos, was redeployed to head Electoral Operations, replacing Isah Magaji Gummi, who was moved to the Voter Registry Department.

Her husband, Segun Showunmi, is a political commentator and member of the Tinubu/Shettima 2027 Presidential Campaign Council. He previously served as spokesperson for Atiku’s 2019 presidential campaign.

The Electoral Operations Department plays a central role in election administration, including coordinating polling arrangements, deploying election materials and managing personnel involved in electoral activities.

Although its director does not independently determine election results, the department’s operational responsibilities have placed the reported redeployment under public scrutiny.

In a statement issued through his Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the reported changes within INEC’s Electoral Operations and Information and Communication Technology departments raised questions that required prompt clarification.

The former vice-president called on the commission to explain the reasons for the redeployments, disclose the criteria used and demonstrate that the decisions were based on merit, followed due process and were free from political interference.

“INEC must explain these decisions, publish the criteria applied and show that every appointment and redeployment followed due process, was based on merit and was free from political interference. Nigerians will not accept vague assurances on matters this serious,” the statement said.

Atiku, however, cautioned against presuming that any official was compromised because of their ethnicity, background or personal associations.

He maintained that where reported political connections or sensitive personnel changes raised public concerns, the electoral commission had a responsibility to provide verifiable assurances of its impartiality.

He also warned that unanswered questions surrounding election administration could deepen public suspicion about the integrity of the 2027 electoral process.

“A government that has driven millions of Nigerians into hardship must not be allowed to turn the electoral umpire into an instrument of political survival,” he said, urging INEC to provide full and verifiable disclosure.

The controversy has also generated reactions on social media, with users expressing differing opinions on whether the personal and political associations of electoral officials should attract scrutiny.

Some questioned whether the appointment of individuals whose spouses or relatives have political affiliations could undermine public confidence in electoral institutions.

One user, @SholaOlapade, asked whether spouses or close relatives of politicians should be permitted to work in electoral or judicial institutions and whether their neutrality could be guaranteed.

Another user, @Ogundamisi, said the reported redeployment raised questions about transparency and the need to protect confidence in INEC’s impartiality ahead of the elections.

However, other users defended Adeyemi-Showunmi, arguing that her marriage should not, by itself, be used to question her professional competence or right to pursue her career.

Some social media commentators also alleged that the changes could facilitate electoral manipulation, although the comments cited in the report did not provide evidence to substantiate those claims.

The commission had yet to publicly respond to the controversy as of the time of the report.

The debate comes as political parties and stakeholders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, placing renewed attention on the independence, transparency and credibility of institutions responsible for conducting the polls.
