Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the reported attack on Peter Obi during his visit to Benue State, describing the incident as unacceptable in a democratic society.
Atiku said political differences should not justify violence or attempts to intimidate political opponents, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
CSONews24 reports that suspected thugs on Tuesday allegedly blocked Obi from entering the state for a humanitarian outreach in Yelwata.
He called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that political actors can carry out their activities without fear of harassment or attack.
The former vice president also urged politicians and their supporters to embrace tolerance, peaceful engagement and respect for democratic principles.
In a statement signed by Kenneth Okonkwo, his official spokesperson, Atiku said he “strongly condemns the violent attack on Peter Obi,” describing the incident as unacceptable.
He stressed that Nigeria’s political process must provide room for competing views and peaceful participation, regardless of party affiliation.
The incident involving Obi has renewed concerns over the conduct of political activities ahead of the 2027 elections and the need for stakeholders to prevent violence during campaigns and other political engagements.
