The Nigerian Army has intensified security operations along the Sokoto-Kebbi border corridor following renewed threats associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, gave the assurance during an operational assessment of Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where he reviewed the security situation and the deployment of troops across the area.
Koughna’s visit included an inspection of the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and surrounding communities following reports of a renewed attack on Ungushi community in the local government area.
During the engagement, the GOC met with community leaders and residents to receive direct accounts of the security situation and hear their concerns over recent developments.
He assured the residents that troops remained stationed in the area and were operating on heightened alert to safeguard lives and property.
Koughna said the Army was prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to emerging security threats, particularly efforts by terrorist elements to establish operational footholds or safe havens within border communities.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and continue their legitimate activities, assuring them that security personnel were firmly deployed across the affected areas.
The GOC also urged residents to deepen their partnership with security agencies by providing credible and actionable information on suspicious movements and activities within their communities.
According to him, sustained cooperation between local communities and security forces is essential to identifying, disrupting and dismantling terrorist networks before they can execute attacks.
The operational assessment forms part of the 8 Division’s broader efforts to review and reinforce its security arrangements in response to emerging threats along the Sokoto-Kebbi border axis.
