The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Chris Nkwonta 14 days to publicly apologise over comments the party described as contrary to its interests.

The ultimatum was issued by the party’s State Working Committee (SWC), led by Chijioke Chukwu, following a meeting held in Umuahia on Wednesday.

The controversy stems from separate comments by Kalu and Nkwonta regarding the political prospects of Labour Party (LP) Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 Abia governorship election.

Kalu had stated during a national television appearance that Otti would win re-election in 2027.

Similarly, Nkwonta, while speaking at a reception organised for the President’s wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Ukwa East, declared that he intended to vote for Otti.

The Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, said in a statement that the SWC unanimously rejected the remarks, describing them as unstatesmanlike and damaging to the party’s unity and electoral ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party said the conduct amounted to a breach of Article 21.2(11) of the APC Constitution, which provides for disciplinary action against members whose actions undermine the party.

The SWC therefore directed Kalu and Nkwonta to tender unreserved public apologies within 14 days, stressing that their statements should be followed by clear commitments to the APC, its leadership and its candidates for the 2027 elections.

The party warned that failure to comply with the directive within the stipulated period would result in the constitution of a disciplinary committee to examine the matter and recommend appropriate sanctions.

The Abia APC said it would continue working towards strengthening its ranks and positioning the party to win the governorship and all legislative seats in the state during the 2027 elections.
