The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged journalists to deepen their understanding of electoral laws and processes ahead of the 2027 general elections to help reduce misinformation and election-related litigation.
The Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Saidu Ahmed, made the call while addressing journalists in the state.
Ahmed stressed the importance of accurate reporting on electoral matters, noting that journalists have a key role in educating voters and promoting public understanding of the electoral process.
“You can make or break even a nation. So it is always on you to try to make a nation, not to break a nation.” He said.
He urged media practitioners to familiarise themselves with relevant electoral guidelines, procedures and legal provisions to ensure that election-related reports are accurate and properly contextualised.
“At the national level, the official communication channel is through the INEC Chairman and the National Commissioner in charge of voter education and publicity.
“At the state level, the official channel is the Resident Electoral Commissioner, who may delegate another official to communicate on behalf of the state office.” He said.
The REC said better understanding of the electoral process would help journalists avoid reports that could mislead the public or contribute to disputes after elections.
He also encouraged journalists to verify information before publication and maintain professionalism throughout the 2027 electioneering period.
“An agent does not work for INEC. If it is not on the record from a named officer or a signed commission document, then it is not INEC speaking.” He said.
Ahmed said credible and responsible journalism would contribute to peaceful elections, informed participation and greater public confidence in the electoral process.
