Social commentator and businessman Isaac Fayose has challenged Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his assertion that opposition parties lack significant support in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general election.
Fayose, speaking in an interview with News Central TV, disagreed with Wike’s position, insisting that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) command considerable support among residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
The comments came after Wike said the opposition was not popular in Abuja and maintained that President Bola Tinubu would comfortably secure victory in both the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 election.
Reacting to the minister’s claim, Fayose declared: “Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi.”
He challenged political leaders to move beyond political gatherings and engage directly with residents to determine the mood of voters ahead of the election.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people. Ask them, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’” he said.
Fayose also suggested that Nigeria could explore the use of opinion polls and mock elections, similar to practices in some other countries, as a way of gauging public sentiment and voter preferences before major elections.
He further claimed that a significant number of Nigerians were prepared to participate in the 2027 election but raised concerns about possible efforts to suppress votes.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us from this time, This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune,” Fayose said.
