Woman Seeks Divorce After 35 Years of Marriage Over Lack of Love

A housewife, Hadiza Abdullahi, has approached a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking dissolution of her 35-year marriage to Isa Usman on the grounds that she no longer loves her husband.

Abdullahi, through her counsel, Abubakar Suleiman, told the court on Wednesday that she could no longer continue with the marriage because her feelings for her husband had faded.

She consequently asked the court to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i, a form of Islamic divorce in which a woman seeks separation by returning the dowry paid by her husband.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Suleiman told the court that his client had been married to Usman for 35 years and that her dowry was N1,000.

He said Abdullahi was prepared to return the dowry to her husband as required under Khul’i.

However, Usman, through his lawyer, I.T. Sanusi, said he could not recall the exact amount paid as dowry but maintained that it was more than N1,000.

Sanusi further told the court that his client was seeking N300,000 from the complainant.

“I pray the court to give us time to present the exact amount that was paid as the complainant’s dowry and reasons why Usman should be paid N300,000,” he said.

The presiding judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the case until September 2 to allow the complainant to present evidence in support of her application and for the parties to clarify the dowry dispute.
