The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified operations against illegal mining activities across Nigeria as authorities move to strengthen regulatory compliance in the solid minerals sector.
The specialised enforcement unit is increasing surveillance and enforcement activities nationwide, with operational teams in the South-West among those stepping up action against operators found to be violating established mining laws and regulations.
The renewed push forms part of broader efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s solid minerals industry, protect licensed investors and address the economic losses associated with unlawful mineral extraction.
Established to support ongoing reforms in the mining sector, the Mining Marshals are tasked with combating illegal mining and promoting adherence to the legal and regulatory framework governing mineral exploration and extraction across the country.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, warned mining operators against breaching the law, maintaining that offenders would not be excused on the grounds of ignorance.
“Ignorance of the law will never be an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are conducted within the ambit of the law.
“Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory framework will face the full weight of legal consequences,” Attah said.
He said the ongoing enforcement drive was designed not only to curb illegal mining but also to create a safer and more transparent operating environment for legitimate investors in the sector.
According to Attah, stronger compliance with mining regulations is also expected to improve revenue generation and enable the country to derive greater economic benefits from its vast mineral resources.
He stressed that Nigeria’s solid minerals potential can only be fully harnessed through lawful, responsible and sustainable mining practices.
The latest crackdown comes as the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development continues its reform agenda aimed at strengthening the sector, attracting investment and confronting the persistent challenge of illegal mining across the country.
The NSCDC Mining Marshals said they would sustain collaboration with relevant regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to enforce compliance, protect Nigeria’s mineral resources and ensure that mining activities are conducted in accordance with the law.
