Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticised the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, over a remark concerning Nigerians’ experiences with electricity supply.
Shehu described the minister’s statement as unacceptable, accusing him of making a claim that did not reflect the realities faced by electricity consumers.
Shehu reacted in a post shared on his X account on Wednesday night, describing the minister’s remarks as false and accusing him of making misleading statements.
“When telling barefaced lies becomes a trademark, it transmutes into pathology and hence incurable and irredeemable.” Shehu wrote.
The controversy followed Tegbe’s reported account that some Nigerians had told him their freezers were now “freezing” because of improved power supply.
“Such is the case in the minister’s shameless lie that smells to heaven.” He added.
Reacting to the comment, Shehu questioned the minister’s assessment of the country’s electricity situation and challenged him to consider the experiences of Nigerians dealing with inadequate and unstable power supply.
He maintained that government officials should provide accurate assessments of the sector and remain sensitive to the challenges faced by citizens.
“Some areas called me to say, look, I should slow down, that everything in their freezer is freezing.
“That is what a freezer is meant to do. Let it freeze the food that needs to be frozen,” Tegbe said.
The exchange comes amid ongoing concerns over electricity supply, tariffs and efforts by the Federal Government to improve power generation and distribution across the country.
